God of the Hills and the Valleys

"Then a man of God came and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, 'Thus says the LORD: Because the Syrians have said, "The LORD is God of the hills, but He is not God of the valleys," therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'" —1 Kings 20:28

The enemies of Israel made a fatal mistake. It was not merely a military error; it was a theological one.

After suffering defeat at the hands of Israel, the counsellors of the king of Syria came to a conclusion. They reasoned,

"Their gods are gods of the hills. Therefore they were stronger than we; but if we fight against them in the plain, surely we will be stronger than they" (1 Kings 20:23).

They believed Israel's God had limitations. In their minds, He could only give victory on the mountaintops, not in the valleys or on the plains.

But they were about to discover that the God of Israel cannot be confined to geography.

God Cannot Be Limited

Before the next battle began, God sent a prophet with an extraordinary message.

Because the Syrians had claimed that the Lord was only the God of the hills, God declared that He would once again give Israel victory so that every nation would know that He is Lord over every place and every circumstance.

People may place limits on God, but God never places limits on Himself.

Our circumstances may change, but His power never changes.

The God of the Mountains

Throughout Scripture, mountains are often places of divine encounters.

Moses received the Law on Mount Sinai. Elijah heard God's gentle whisper on Mount Horeb. Jesus was transfigured on a mountain, revealing His glory before His disciples.

Mountains speak of seasons of breakthrough, revelation, answered prayer, and spiritual victories. They remind us of those moments when God's presence feels near and His blessings seem abundant.

Thank God for the mountaintop experiences.

The God of the Plains

Yet life is not lived on the mountaintop.

Most of our days are spent in the plains the ordinary routines of work, family, responsibilities, and daily faithfulness.

It is easy to look for God only during conferences, special meetings, or extraordinary moments. But God is just as present in the ordinary as He is in the extraordinary.

He walks with us in our daily routines, quietly shaping our character and teaching us faithfulness in the little things.

Never underestimate what God can do in the ordinary seasons of life.

The God of the Valleys

There are also valleys.

Valleys represent seasons of sorrow, disappointment, waiting, loss, and painful battles. Yet the greatest demonstration of God's love took place in humanity's deepest valley.

The eternal Son of God laid aside the visible glory of heaven, clothed Himself in human flesh, and entered our broken world. He carried our sins to the Cross, conquered death through His resurrection, and shared His victory with all who believe in Him.

That is why David could confidently declare,

"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me" (Psalm 23:4).

Notice that the promise is not that we will avoid every valley, but that we will never walk through one alone.

He Is Lord in Every Season

Perhaps today you are standing on a mountain, rejoicing in God's goodness. Or perhaps you are walking across the plains, faithfully serving Him in the ordinary. Or maybe you find yourself in a valley, wondering if God still sees you.

Be encouraged.

The God who meets you on the mountain is the same God who walks beside you in the plains and carries you through the valleys. His presence does not depend on your circumstances. His faithfulness is constant because His nature never changes.

No matter what season you are in today, remember this: He is not merely the God of the hills. He is the God of the hills, the plains, and the valleys. He is Lord in every place, every season, and every moment of your life.
