The God Kind of Love

The Bible helps us understand that when we believe in Jesus Christ and confess Him as Lord, we are saved and born of God (1 John 5:1). This means that we have received the nature of God within us.

Because we are born of God, we possess the God-kind of love. Love is not merely something a child of God is instructed to practise; it is part of our new nature. It is natural for a child of God to love, just as it is natural for a dog to bark. You get the point!

Romans 5:5 declares, “…the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

This is not the ordinary kind of love found in the world. It is the God-kind of love. The Bible further reveals in 2 Timothy 1:7 that the Spirit God has given us is also the Spirit of love.

Love Is Our New Nature

Therefore, we are not merely human beings; in a sense, we are “love beings.” Love is now part of our spiritual nature. It is our default mode.

Because God’s love has been placed within us, we are able to love others openly and sincerely when we allow this divine nature to find expression through our lives.

Of course, there will be situations in which loving people is not easy. People may hurt us deeply through their words, actions, betrayal, or rejection. Their behaviour may affect our hearts and make us want to withdraw or retaliate.

Nevertheless, God is able to help us love, no matter what we experience. He has given us His nature and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit so that we can love as we ought to love.

The Nature Must Be Developed

A puppy has the natural ability to bark just like an adult dog. However, we do not expect a puppy to begin barking immediately after it is born. As it grows, that ability gradually begins to show.

In the same way, although we have received the love nature of God, we must learn to give expression to it. As we grow spiritually and walk more closely with God, we become better at loving others. Spiritual maturity allows the love already within us to become increasingly visible.

Let God’s Love Find Expression

It is not enough merely to possess the God-kind of love. The responsibility is upon us to demonstrate it so that God may be glorified through our lives.

Therefore, continually remind yourself to allow the nature of God’s love within you to find expression. Let others be encouraged, strengthened, and blessed as you demonstrate the God-kind of love.

You may not become perfect at loving people overnight. Remember, however, that “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Begin where you are today, and God will help you grow.

Jesus said,

“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35).

Think about the tremendous impact your life can make wherever you go when the love of God is expressed through you.
