How to Overcome Distractions in Prayer

Categories : Distraction Prayer
Have you ever sat down to pray, and before you know it your mind is wandering all over town. Distractions and disturbances during prayer are a common struggle faced by all. You are not alone in this battle. However, the good news is that you can overcome it.

The Bible says, “And the Philistine (Goliath) drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.” (1 Samuel 17:16)

Do you know that Goliath came and tried to disturb the Israelites during the time when the morning and evening sacrifice was offered? Speaking in simpler terms, this disturbance was during the time of prayer.

If you find yourself struggling to find stillness during prayer, allow me share these two tips which may help you gain better focus in prayer.

1.Use soft instrumental music
Music has an amazing ability to speak to our hearts and minds like no other mean of communication. Music transcends all language barriers. I often use soft instrumental music as a background while I am praying.

This helps me to better focus in prayer while the soft instrumental music speaks deeply to my soul and drowns distractions. I often end up worshiping. Try it! You will see that time just flies by.

2.Alternate Bible Reading and Prayer
There are times when my mind is running at the speed of 200kms per hour because there is so much to be done. At such times, I put on the soft worship instrumental music and start reading the word. As I am doing this, my mind stops wandering and gets tuned to His voice.

At one point, a scripture really begins to speak to my heart. At that moment, I then start praying the scripture till I feel the burden lifting. I then go back to reading the word. Alternating between the word and prayer keeps my mind from wandering and having a great time in His presence.

Always remember, the Lord appreciates every effort that you make to spend time in His Presence. This is why He promised us His Holy Spirit to help us in our weakness. (Romans 8:26)
Prayer
Lord, I call upon You; hasten to me. Give ear to my voice when I cry to You. Let my prayer be set forth as incense before You, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. (Psalm 141:1-2)
