The Dangers of Forgetting

Let all that I am praise the Lord;
may I never forget the good things he does for me. (Psalm 103:2 NLT)

David made a prayer and commitment never to forget the good things God had done for him. We, too, must pray and make the same commitment never to forget God’s goodness in our lives.

We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and garlic; but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this manna before our eyes!” (Numbers 11:5-6)

How quickly the Israelites had forgotten what their fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic had cost them. They had to pay a hefty price of being slaves living in inhuman conditions. They had often cried out to the Lord for deliverance because they just could not bear to pay such a price.

Once the Lord has delivered them, they conveniently forgot what the Lord did for them and cried for the so-called ‘good things’ they had left behind in Egypt. Isn’t it strange that they remembered the food of Egypt but did not remember the mighty deliverance of the Lord?

I am convinced that forgetting the good things that God has done for us is sin.

1. Forgetting leads to unbelief and rebellion
Even though the children of Israel had witnessed so many miracles, they “soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against Him at the Red Sea.” (Psalm 106:7 NLT)

2. Forgetting makes us act foolishly
how quickly they forgot what he had done!
They wouldn’t wait for his counsel! (Psalm 106:13 NLT)
Forgetting the goodness of God causes us to get impatient and not wait on His direction. Impatient people do stupid things.

3. Forgetting ignites God’s wrath
They forgot God, their Savior,
who had done such great things in Egypt—
such wonderful things in the land of Ham,
such awesome deeds at the Red Sea.
So he declared he would destroy them.
But Moses, his chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people.
He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them. (Psalm 106:21-23 NLT)

Surely the Lord has done something good for you in the past. Make it a point to thank Him for it. Never forget the goodness of the Lord.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, give me the grace never to forget the good things You have done for my family members and me.
