"Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21)
No doubt, we are in the last days when the works of the flesh will start to manifest in full length. We are at a time when satan has released different spirits into the earth, so even believers must be careful. We are at a time when we must guard our hearts and be watchful else we may fall victim to these ravaging forces. The Bible talks about the manifestation of these spirits in different forms, and we need to watch so we won't fall victim.
Also, the Book of Revelation lists the sins that will be prominent in the last days prior to Christ's return to the earth. For example, the Bible says in Revelation 9:20-21, "But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts."
One of these spirits is sorceries. This is perhaps the strongest spirit of all the spirits who will control the people at the time of the end. We think of sorcery as being linked to the occult or witchcraft. The meaning of this word, however, is much deeper. The Greek word for "sorcery" is pharmakeia.
The Bible says in Revelations 18:23, "The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived." We derive our English word pharmacy from this word. It is used five times in the New Testament (Galatians 5:20; Revelation 9:21; 18:23; 21:8; 22:15). At times it is translated as "sorceries" and other times as "witchcraft."
A close pastor friend was once at a party with other individuals. (This was before he was saved). While they were all boozing and getting high on drugs, he saw a strange, fearful-looking creature move in the room. He screamed, knowing it was a demon. He yelled Jesus, and the creature melted into thin air. The amazing thing was all his friends who were high on drugs suddenly came to their senses. He told them about this creature. They, too, acknowledged seeing this creature. This was the demon of addiction. They were all saved.
How many people have found themselves under the bondage of similar uncommon spirits? We need to be careful so that such spirits won't lure us. And the key is to be filled at all times with the Spirit of God. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:18-21, "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God."
Surround yourself with the right company at all times. We have songs now that also transmit these uncommon spirits into people. That is the reason the Bible says sing psalms and spiritual songs so your spirit man can be alive to God always, thereby shutting the door against the spirit of these last days.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank you for the light of your word shed in my heart today. I pray that you will help me to guard the gate of my heart with truth. I pray for the stability of faith so I won't be swept away by the wind and waves of these end-times. In Jesus' name. Amen.
