For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. (2 Corinthians 10:4-6)
Joshua sent some leaders to go and check out the land God promised to give them. They felt they should have an idea of what the land was about before going full force to possess it. And so the leaders returned with the report saying, "The people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan." (Numbers 13:28-29).
The walled cities the Israelites faced in their conquest of the Promised Land represented strongholds that posed a significant challenge. The Israelites wondered how they could conquer these cities, as the walls and gates seemed impenetrable. They felt this was a dead end. In fact, some people who heard about the walled cities started considering returning to Egypt. How often has God shown you a vision, but you thought of going back because of a barrier? Sometimes, the devil makes the barrier look impenetrable; meanwhile, many people have penetrated it. Many people have walked through and even over similar barriers in the past.
These walled cities are symbolic of the spiritual barriers that we, as Christians, may encounter on our spiritual journey. These barriers or walls seem insurmountable, and we may wonder how we can overcome them. However, if you read further, you would realize how God miraculously brought down that wall that seems insurmountable. He sank the wall and the people possessed the land with ease. God levelled the barriers, and they walked through to enjoy the blessing.
Just as God gave the Israelites victory over the walled cities, He can help us overcome the spiritual strongholds that hinder our progress. With faith and reliance on God's power, we can break through these barriers and walls and experience the fullness of God's promises. Never forget that we have spiritual weapons to crash and pull down every stronghold of the devil that wants to stand against us and hinder our progress.
All we need is faith and absolute trust in God. He is not a man that promises and fails. What we should also realize is that God is not oblivious about the wall. Yes, he knows about it before we even came close to it. He is not caught unawares as you are when you saw the wall. That is enough reason to trust Him. He knew the barrier was there, yet He led you in that direction. He knows the end from the beginning; that is, He knows how to bring down the stronghold against you. So wait on Him, stand behind Him and let Him show Himself strong on your behalf. 2 Chronicles 16:9 says, "For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him."
Also, as we journey on the road towards our spiritual blessing, we will encounter four significant spiritual barriers or walls that seek to hinder our progress:
1. The traditions of men
2. Wrong thinking
3. Unforgiveness
4. Unbelief
The good news is that there is no barrier beyond your God, so stay calm and trust Him to help you through.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank you for the walls you have broken for me in the past. Thank you for making me see that I am not alone on this journey. I pray that you help me to keep trusting you as I go on. I pray that nothing shall hold me down anymore. The walls ahead of me are broken. In Jesus' name. Amen.
