“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its flavour, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16)
Who is a leader?
A leader is not a person who carries a title. A true leader is a person who positively influences others. A true leader is one who makes a difference in the lives of others. By this understanding, even a housewife, a student etc., is a leader. Positively influencing people around you qualifies you to be called a leader.
Don’t underestimate your power to positively influence people around you every day of your life. It does not really matter if you have a title or not. True leadership is all about serving people so that the name of the Lord is magnified.
As a leader, if you want to influence many positively, then it is crucial that you develop the habit of excellence in every area of your life.
You can then influence others around you to do the same. This will make you grow in your leadership levels faster than you can ever imagine.
Excellence is contagious. By committing to being an excellent J-12 leader, an excellent parent, an excellent spouse, or an excellent student, you not only influence your loved ones positively, but you become an excellent advertisement for the Kingdom of God. You become the salt and the light to all around you. Both salt and light have properties that impact things around them. Salt is used to enhance flavour. Light is symbolic of awareness, knowledge, and understanding.
Excellence is not an accident. In other words, it does not just happen one day. It is a habit that has to be intentionally inculcated in your daily routine. Excellence is an ongoing process with a lifetime harvest of rewards.
Practically speaking, cultivating excellence could mean reaching your appointments on time regularly, working out regularly or spending time in prayer at fixed times regularly and so forth.
Sometimes you may fail at doing certain things but don’t let that upset you. Rise up! Shake the dust and move on. Someone said, “The truth is powerful when it’s argued, but it’s more powerful when it’s demonstrated,” When you walk in excellence, you are demonstrating the truth.
