“Speaking in tongues is demonic,” a lie the adversary (the devil) throws at believers, seeking to rob them of the divine gifts the Lord has endowed them with. How important it is for us to discern the truth and to shield ourselves with the Word of God, lest we fall prey to these deceits. The Bible, our compass, leads us through these misconceptions, illuminating our path.
Greatest Lie #1: Speaking in Tongues is Demonic
satan, the father of lies (John 8:44), whispers this lie to dull our spiritual ears to the heavenly harmony of tongues. It is through the baptism of the Holy Spirit that we receive this powerful gift of speaking or praying in tongues. “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4)
Apostles Peter and Paul, steadfast followers of Christ, embraced this gift and also encouraged the early church to practice these gifts. They taught that speaking in tongues is not an act of demonic possession but a divine communion, a spiritual dialogue with the Almighty, one that edifies our soul and fortifies our faith. “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God..” (1 Corinthians 14:2)
Greatest Lie #2: It’s Not for Every Believer
The misconception that this gift is only for the privileged few is another falsehood originating from the pits of hell. Apostle Paul, in his spiritual wisdom, wished for every believer to speak in tongues, for he recognized the spiritual edification and the fortification it brings to our soul (1 Corinthians 14:5).
The gift of tongues is available to every believer, a spiritual language breaking the barriers of our human limitations and uniting our spirits with the Lord our Creator. This gift enables us to transcend our human boundaries and to communicate with God in a language undefiled by human imperfection.
Believing the lies of the enemy is like allowing discordant notes to disturb the spiritual symphony God has composed for us. Speaking in tongues is not a measure of spiritual maturity but a journey of spiritual maturation, a continuous process of growth and development in our relationship with God.
As we embrace this divine gift, our spirits are enriched with the fruit of the Spirit, which enables us to reflect the image of God more accurately. (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV) It is pivotal for us to discern the truth from the lies. By doing so, we are not only negating the lies of the enemy but also opening our hearts to the boundless love and immeasurable grace of our Heavenly Father.
So here’s what we need to do. Every day, set aside time to speak in tongues. As we do this, we will see the Holy Spirit guiding our steps, instructing our hearts, and leading us into all truth.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, we rebuke the enemy's lies and embrace the gift of the Holy Spirit. Fill us with discernment and faith as we communicate in our heavenly language, uniting our spirits with Yours. Amen.
