At some point in our spiritual journey, we’ve all felt the weight of an unseen battle—a spiritual warfare that targets not our flesh and bone but our very souls. Have you ever wondered why you are under such attack? The truth is simple yet profound: The devil would not be attacking you so hard if there wasn’t something valuable inside of you. Just as thieves don’t waste time breaking into empty houses, the enemy doesn't bother with people who don't carry great potential or purpose.
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)
In the heart of every believer is a divine treasure—gifts, purpose, and potential placed by God. The enemy knows the power of a believer who walks in their God-given purpose, and hence, he tries to deter and destroy them before they reach their full potential.
Consider the story of Moses. Right from his birth, there was an attempt to snuff out his life. Pharaoh had ordered the killing of Hebrew baby boys, fearing the rising numbers of the Israelites. But God had a plan for Moses, a purpose so significant that the enemy tried to thwart it from the beginning. Moses, against the odds, was not only saved but raised in Pharaoh's palace, later leading his people to freedom.
"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5)
Just like Moses, you were known by God before you were even formed. The potential inside you is immense. But recognising this is only half the battle. The other half is preparing for the inevitable spiritual warfare that will try to derail you from your destiny.
So, how do you stand firm and protect the treasure within?
1. Arm Yourself with the Full Armor of God:
"Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." - Ephesians 6:11. This includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God. Each piece serves to protect and empower us.
2. Stay Rooted in the Word:
The Bible is not just a book; it’s your weapon. Jesus combated Satan's temptations in the wilderness with scripture: "It is written…". Being well-versed in the Word allows you to counteract the lies of the enemy with truth.
3. Cultivate a Prayerful Life:
Just as a soldier maintains communication with the base, we need to maintain our communication with God. Paul advises, "Pray without ceasing." (1 Thessalonians 5:17). In every situation, turn to God in prayer. It’s our direct line to the Commander-in-Chief.
4. Surround Yourself with Righteous Company:
Keep company with those who can uplift, advise, and pray with you. "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17). In times of battle, having a squad that’s got your back is invaluable.
"But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." (2 Corinthians 4:7)
In the midst of these battles, remember that the very fact you're under attack is an affirmation of the treasure within you. Every trial and temptation is an acknowledgement of your value in the Kingdom of God. The enemy does not waste his time on empty vessels.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, ignite in us Your divine spark. Amidst life's battles, may we recognise the treasure you have hidden with us. Help us reflect Your love and purpose in everything we do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
