“Now without faith, it is impossible to please him, for the one who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6 NET)
In our journey with God, there are moments when His voice resonates clearly within our hearts, beckoning us to step out in faith. However, it is human nature to sometimes hesitate, question, and seek affirmation. One might wonder, "If we truly know that it is God guiding us, why do we not immediately respond with a resounding 'yes'?"
The Israelites, during their exodus, witnessed God's miracles firsthand - from parting the Red Sea to the provision of manna. Yet, they grumbled, questioned, and doubted His plans multiple times. Their journey reflects our own heart’s struggles.
“Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.” (Deuteronomy 8:2 NIV)
Our hesitations often stem from fear of the unknown, past disappointments, or the weight of our human limitations. But God, in His infinite wisdom, understands our frailty. He knows our frame and remembers that we are but dust (Psalm 103:14). He doesn't condemn us for wanting confirmation, but He does call us to grow in faith.
The story of Gideon is enlightening in this context. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and told him that he would save Israel from the Midianites, Gideon sought confirmation not once but multiple times, using a fleece (Judges 6:36-40). While it's easy to think of Gideon's requests as a lack of faith, we can also see them as a sincere desire to ensure he was following God's will.
What this teaches us is profound: God is patient with us in our quest for affirmation. While He desires our complete trust in Him, He also understands our need for reassurance.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV)
But there's an even deeper lesson. Every time we say "yes" without hesitation, every time we trust without seeing the full picture, we not only strengthen our faith but also move closer to God's heart. Cooperation in trust strengthens a bond, and it's no different in our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
As believers, our goal should be to mature in our faith, to reach a place where our immediate response to God's call is an unwavering "yes." If you find yourself hesitating today, remember the countless times God has come through for you. Reflect on the moments He's shown His faithfulness, the times He's guided your steps, and the occasions when He turned your sorrow into joy.
Let these memories bolster your faith. And when God speaks, let your heart be ready to say, "Here I am, Lord. Send me."
Prayer
Father, strengthen our trust in You. Every time You call, let our hearts resonate with a confident 'yes', knowing You've always been faithful. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
