Prayer
Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you wish?” She answered, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. (Joshua 15:18-19)
Today, in our text, we find that Achsah told her father, Caleb, that she had been given the “south land”, which in Hebrew means “dry.” This is because the southern area of Palestine was dry like a desert. Achsah was saying to her father Caleb that she owned “unproductive land.”
When she came to her father, this is what she asked for. “Give me also springs of water.” She wasn’t bashful. She came with boldness and confidence to her father who loved her, and requested him out of a father-daughter relationship.
Now, boldness does not mean being disrespectful. Notice that the scripture says, “She dismounted from her donkey.” She gave respect that was due to her father. (Read Romans 13:7)
And now is where this story surpasses all our dreams and goes to the realm that the Apostle Paul told the Christians in Ephesus about, what our God will do “exceedingly, above all that we ask or think.” (Ephesians 3: 20).
If an earthly father like Caleb carried such a heart wherein he blessed his daughter more than what she asked for, how much more our Heavenly Father?
One of the names of our God is Jehovah Jireh, which means “the all-providing One”. He always provides more than enough. This same God of more-than-enough came in the flesh and walked among His people. As He walked the shores of the Sea of Galilee, He said to Peter, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” (Luke 5:4)
What a catch it turned out to be—a boat-sinking, net-breaking catch! It was such a big and unexpected blessing that Peter and all who were with him were “astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken”.
Don’t settle for anything less. If you don’t have a job, you will get a good job. If you have a job, you will get a promotion and a position. If you have no house, the Lord will provide a house for you, if you already have a house, He will fill your house with good things. He is the God of more than enough.
