Enjoying Divine Direction
“The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” (Psalm 32:8 NLT)
God did not leave us in the dark. He is fully committed to leading us on the right path. If we want Him to lead us, we must be "willing and obedient" (Isaiah 1:19). He will not force us to follow His path because He created us as free moral agents. We have choices to make, and every choice has consequences or blessings.
We all need divine direction to choose between alternatives; without divine direction, we cannot choose the best path. We need divine direction in selecting the right life partner, making business investments, and living our daily lives. Many have walked into death traps because they lacked divine direction. I have heard many stories about people who escaped a plane crash because they were led to leave the plane.
Divine direction will cause you to be
At the right place
At the right time
Doing the right thing
Meeting the right people
What are the benefits of divine direction?
1. You’ll escape death and evil
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)
2. You’ll be led to hidden riches
I will give you the treasures of darkness
And hidden riches of secret places,
That you may know that I, the Lord,
Who calls you by your name,
Am the God of Israel. (Isaiah 45:3)
3. You’ll operate in greater authority
Our obedience to divine leading positions us as authority figures. If you are not under authority, you cannot exercise authority. Devils recognize our authority when we submit to God. (James 4:7), (Matthew 8:9-11)
How can we enjoy divine leading?
1. Your will must be submissive to God
“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. (Luke 9:23)
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. (John 5:30)
But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27)
2. Commit your plans to God and Wait on Him
If you want to hear, you must learn to wait. You cannot rush God to speak. Whenever God delays His response, it is to test your patience. Saul acted in haste because he felt like God was too slow in His response, which also contributed to his rejection. (1 Samuel 13:10-14)
A man’s heart plans his way,
But the Lord directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
3. Pray in the Spirit
One of our weaknesses is that we don’t know as we ought to. Whenever we pray in tongues, we depend on the help of the Holy Spirit over things that are beyond our knowledge and understanding. Whenever you need divine direction, spend some time praying in the Spirit, clarity will be given to your spirit man.
26 Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26-27)
Different ways that God can lead us
1.The word
The word of God is the primary source of His leading. The written word was first a spoken word. God spoke it into the hearts of the author. The written word is as powerful as the spoken word. Study the written word, and your spirit will receive the revealed word (rhema). (John 1:1)
2.The inward witness and the voice of the Holy Spirit
The inward witness is an assurance in your spirit concerning a decision that you’re about to make. The inward witness is like a green light, yellow light, or red light in your spirit. Sometimes, you can feel calm about a decision; other times, you can be fearful or feel like taking a break before you decide. Most of these are termed "the inward witness." You have to learn and train yourself in knowing and obeying the inward witness.
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, (Romans 8:16)
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
3.Wise counsel
Jethro gave wise counsel to Moses, and it helped him to overcome the daily stress of managing the people.
Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. (Exodus 18:19)
4.Angelic manifestation
Angels can occasionally appear to give directions, but we must be careful in seeking the appearance of angels. The primary way God wants to lead us is through His word and His Spirit. Any angelic manifestation must be subject to the authority of the word of God. If what the angel said is not in agreement with the word, we must discard the supernatural manifestation and stick with the word. God is the one that decides if angels will appear to us, we are not to be praying for angelic manifestation or leading.
3 About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” 4 And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. 6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” 7 And when the angel who spoke to him had departed, Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually. (Acts 10:3-7)
5.Dreams and visions
We can receive divine leading from God when our spirit is in tune with Him.
“And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions. (Joel 2:28)
As of today, may you begin to enjoy divine direction in Jesus' name.
