“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)
In the midst of life's chaos and challenges, the search for peace often feels like a never-ending journey. We try to find it in various places—vacations, success, relationships, and financial stability—only to realise that these external sources can never truly satisfy the longing in our hearts. But peace isn’t a destination, an achievement, or something we can purchase. True peace is found in a person: Lord Jesus Christ.
The peace that Lord Jesus offers is different from anything the world can provide. His peace is not temporary, nor is it dependent on what is happening around us. It’s a peace that stays with us, even in the midst of the hardest storms, because it is rooted in His eternal presence and love.
After I finished one of my services, a person walked up to me and said that he was going to the mountains for a month, resigning from his job and other responsibilities in search of peace. Many of us can relate to this—believing that peace will come from a change of scenery, a new experience, or some external event. Whether it’s a relaxing vacation, a better job, or a new relationship, we often think, "If I can just get this or reach that place, I’ll finally have peace." But time and again, we find that these things only offer fleeting moments of relief.
The truth is peace is not tied to a location or any material gain. In John 14:27, Lord Jesus says, "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you." This is not a peace that we can achieve or find on our own. It’s a gift from Jesus, one that He willingly gives to all who trust in Him. His peace is unique because it does not come from external circumstances. Instead, it flows from the deep relationship we have with Him. When we focus on Jesus, our hearts can be at rest, regardless of what is happening around us.
Jesus’s peace doesn’t mean the absence of trials. Many times, we think peace comes when all our problems are solved. But Jesus never promised us a life free from difficulties. In fact, He told His disciples that they would face troubles in this world (John 16:33). The peace Jesus gives isn’t about escaping storms but about having the ability to remain calm and grounded in the middle of them.
Think of the moment when Jesus calmed the storm in Mark 4:39. The disciples were terrified as the winds and waves raged around them. But Jesus stood up, spoke to the storm, and brought immediate calm. This same Jesus, the one who has authority over the wind and the waves, offers us His peace. It’s the kind of peace that allows us to remain steady even when life feels overwhelming because we know that He is in control.
The world may offer temporary peace, but Jesus’s peace is enduring. The world’s peace comes with conditions—it depends on things going well, being comfortable, or having everything we want. But Jesus’s peace transcends these conditions. It guards our hearts and minds, as Philippians 4:7 reminds us, and allows us to live without fear, even when everything around us is uncertain.
Take a moment today to reflect on where you have been searching for peace outside of Jesus. Have you been seeking peace in external circumstances, believing that a change in your situation will bring you the rest you crave? If so, turn your heart back to Jesus, the true source of peace. Meditate on John 14:27 and remember that His peace is available to you right now, regardless of what you are going through.
Begin by spending quiet time in His presence, asking Him to fill your heart with His peace. Release the things that have been troubling you—whether they are financial worries, health concerns, or relational struggles—and place them in His hands. As you do this, trust that His peace will guard your heart and mind.
As a daily practice, write down one area of your life where you’ve been feeling anxious or troubled. Pray over it, asking Lord Jesus to bring His peace into that situation. Then, throughout the day, whenever you feel that anxiety returning, pause and remind yourself of John 14:27. Speak His promise out loud: "Jesus, You have given me Your peace."
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the true source of peace. Help me to stop searching for peace in things that cannot satisfy and instead rest in Your presence. No matter what storms I face, I trust that Your peace will sustain me. In Your precious name, Amen.
