Fasting and Prayer
A threefold cord is not quickly broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:12). This verse is commonly quoted during wedding ceremonies, symbolizing the strength of unity between the bride, groom, and God. However, the significance of the threefold cord extends beyond marital relationships, carrying a much deeper meaning that can be traced all throughout the Bible.
In the life of a believer, the threefold cord finds expression through faith, hope, and love, as described in 1 Corinthians 13:13. These virtues are essential for spiritual growth and resilience, and together, they form the core of a Christian's relationship with God and others. Each aspect of this threefold cord is interconnected and dependent on the others, making it strong and enduring.
The Practices of a Believer
In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches his followers the essential elements of living as a child of God, emphasizing the importance of giving, praying, and fasting.
- When you give… (Matthew 6:2)
- When you pray… (Matthew 6:5)
- When you fast… (Matthew 6:16)
Notice it does not say ‘if’ but when. Lord Jesus presents these practices not as optional but as integral aspects of a believer's life.
When Christians give with a pure heart, they reflect the love and generosity of God, who gave his only Son to save humanity (John 3:16).
Lord Jesus taught us to pray with sincerity and humility, not to impress others or merely recite empty words. Through prayer, we develop a closer relationship with God and learn to depend on Him for all our needs.
Fasting helps us to focus on our spiritual growth, break free from worldly distractions, and gain a deeper understanding of His will.
The Strength of the Threefold Cord
When practised together, giving, praying, and fasting create a powerful threefold cord that strengthens a Christian's faith and relationship with God (Ecclesiastes 4:12).
In Mark 4:8, 20, Lord Jesus discusses the thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and hundredfold returns, illustrating the exponential increase in spiritual blessings as believers engage in prayer, giving, and fasting.
The Hundredfold Return
I believe when a believer prays, they open their hearts to God's guidance and blessings, potentially releasing a thirtyfold return. Combining prayer with giving demonstrates the believer's trust in God's provision and can result in a sixtyfold blessing. However, when a Christian incorporates fasting alongside prayer and giving, they create an environment that invites a hundredfold return, unlocking unparalleled spiritual abundance and growth. I hear the Spirit say, “get ready for a 100 fold return.”
The Story of Cornelius
The story of Cornelius in Acts 10:30-31 exemplifies the power of practising prayer, giving, and fasting in unison. As a devout man, Cornelius fasted, prayed, and gave generously to those in need. His dedication to these spiritual disciplines captured God's attention, leading to an angelic visitation and divine instructions to seek out Apostle Peter.
As a result of Cornelius' faithfulness, Peter was guided to Cornelius' household, where he shared the gospel with Cornelius and his family. This encounter led to the salvation and baptism of Cornelius' entire household, showcasing the incredible blessings and spiritual impact that can result from a lifestyle embracing prayer, giving, and fasting. God is no respecter of persons. If you embrace this principle, you, too, will see the same incredible results.
Guidelines for Effective 40 Days Fast
The fast begins at midnight (00:00 hours) and concludes at 14:00 hours (2:00 PM) daily.
For those who are spiritually advanced and feel capable, the fast can be extended until 15:00 hours (3:00 PM).
Dietary Restrictions:
During the fasting hours (from 00:00 to 14:00 hours), avoid consuming tea, coffee, milk, or any other beverages except water. It is encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the fasting period to stay hydrated.
Post-Fast Nutrition:
After the fasting period ends (post 14:00 or 15:00 hours), you may return to your normal meal routine.
Spiritual Focus:
To gain the full benefits of this fast, try to minimise worldly distractions such as social media. This time should be used for reflection, prayer, or other spiritual practices.
Remember, fasting is as much about spiritual nourishment as it is about physical discipline. It’s important to listen to your body and adjust accordingly.
During this 40-Day Prayer Program, it's important to understand that our prayers are not directed at human beings. Instead, they are aimed at the spiritual entities as described in Ephesians 6:12. "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12).
The Most Effective Time to Pray:
In the teachings of Matthew 24:43, we find a profound metaphor: "If the master of the house had known at what hour the thief would come, he would have stayed awake and not allowed his house to be broken into." This passage serves as a spiritual analogy emphasising the importance of vigilance and preparedness.
Why the Midnight Hour?
Just as a thief often comes in the night, unexpected and unseen, so too are the challenges we face (2 Peter 3:10). To counteract these challenges, the midnight hour is spiritually significant.
From 00:00 to 01:30 (12 AM to 1:30 AM), the atmosphere is considered most conducive for prayer. It's believed that during these hours, the forces of darkness are most active, making it a pivotal time for spiritual intercession.
In contrast, mornings are often rushed with preparations for the day, and worldly cares can dominate our thoughts, hindering deep spiritual connection.
Health and Safety Precautions:
Before beginning the fast associated with this prayer program, it's crucial to consult with your physician, particularly if you are on medication, have any chronic health conditions, or if you are pregnant or nursing.
Listen to your body and make adjustments as necessary. Your physical well-being is important and should be considered alongside your spiritual practices.
Prayer
Repeat every prayer missile till it comes from your heart. Only then move on to the next prayer missile. Don’t rush.
