Building a marriage and a family in today’s fast-paced, challenging world is no small task. It demands unwavering commitment, effort, and wisdom. Yet, the most critical element in establishing a truly godly household is inviting God into every facet of our lives.
Psalm 127:1 says, “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.”
A Christ-centered home is not just a place where Christians reside but a dwelling that reflects the character and presence of Jesus Christ. A Christ-Centered house has certain characteristics. Let's take a look at them:
1. A Foundation Built on Christ
Just as a physical structure requires a solid foundation, a home must rest on Jesus to stand firm against life’s storms. In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compares the wise builder who builds on the rock to those who listen to His words and act on them. Similarly, a Christ-centered home must be rooted in God’s word and guided by His principles. This foundation ensures stability and resilience during times of trial.
Practical Steps to do this:
- Begin or close each day as a family with a short time of prayer and scripture reading.
- Make decisions based on biblical values rather than worldly standards.
2. A House of Order and Peace
Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 14:33 that “God is not the author of confusion but of peace.” A Christ-centered home is orderly—not necessarily in the sense of having everything neat and tidy, but in maintaining godly priorities and standards. Family members must regularly assess what aligns with God’s will and what does not. Questions such as, “Does this build our family in faith?” or “Does this activity glorify God?” help maintain spiritual order.
3. A Place of Spiritual Disciplines
A Christ-centered home is a spiritual hub where the word of God is studied, prayers are offered, and worship is a lifestyle. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, God commands His people to teach His word diligently to their children, talking about it throughout their daily lives. Parents set the tone for a spiritually vibrant household by modelling these disciplines.
4. A Refuge Marked by Grace
No family is without disagreements or challenges. Even in the most godly homes, there will be moments of tension. What sets a Christ-centered home apart is the atmosphere of grace and forgiveness. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” When parents model forgiveness and grace, it creates a safe space for children to admit mistakes and seek reconciliation.
Practical Steps to do this:
- Apologise openly when wrong and forgive quickly.
- Avoid rehashing past mistakes and focus on moving forward.
5. Leading by Example
Joshua’s declaration, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15), exemplifies the role of parents in setting a spiritual example. Children often do what they observe. Parents who prioritise church, prayer, and service inspire their children to do the same.
Practical Steps:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to church and ministry involvement.
- Show Christlike love and humility in your interactions with others.
6. Protecting Against Ungodly Influences
If Christ is not the head of a home, satan seeks to fill that void. Proverbs 4:23 warns us to “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Parents must vigilantly monitor what influences enter their homes, whether through media, relationships, or habits.
Practical Steps:
- Set boundaries on what family members watch on television or mobile
- Pray over your home, anointing it with oil at least once a month dedicating it as a space for God’s presence.
A Christ-centered home is not built overnight but through daily intentional choices, prayer, and reliance on God’s grace.
Bible Reading: Genesis 47-49
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, I dedicate all my family members to you.
Father, in the name of Jesus, from this day onwards, I disconnect myself and all my family members from anything that is contrary to your will.
In the name of Jesus, I break all evil affiliations from previous generations over every family member of mine (including myself)
As for me and my household, we shall serve the LORD alone.
