If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. (Colossians 3:1)
Jesus instructed His disciples to think about their mansions in the Father's house as an antidote to discouragement (John 14:2)
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:2)
It depicts a choice or a decision made with a person’s mind that is independent of his or her emotions.
David fixed his heart on praising the Lord to such a degree that even in the midst of terrible adversity, he remained steadfast (Psalm 57:7). Those who do not fix their hearts on the things of God in advance of problems will succumb to the temptation (2Chronicles 12:14).
So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed and covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God). (Colossians 3:5)
The word "put to death” is the word “mortify," which means "to discipline (one's body and appetites) by self-denial"
1.Deprive of power – don’t feed those things
Try and avoid seeing those things that will fuel your appetite for these things
2.Deaden – kill
Fasting and prayer will help in this regard
But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. (Colossians 3:14)
Colossians 3:14 tells us that Love is the bond of perfectness. The Good News Bible says it like this, “And to all these qualities add love, which binds all things together in perfect unity.” It is Love that binds all things together in perfect unity. God’s design for the Church is Love, whereby everyone walks in Love unto maturity through the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16)
This is more than instruction to memorize Scripture. God's Word has to be in us "richly in all wisdom." This only happens as the Holy Spirit directs and inspires our understanding and application of God's Word.
