Cultivating the Supernatural

Categories : Waiting
In our Christian journey, we often find ourselves navigating the delicate balance between using our God-given talents and depending on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
As Paul the Apostle writes in 1 Corinthians 12:4–6, there are diversities of gifts, ministries, and activities but the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God works through them all.

This means our abilities are not independent of God; they are expressions of His working within us. Yet, the tension arises when we begin to rely more on the gift than on the Giver.

The Danger of Subtle Self-Reliance
It is right to develop our skills and pursue excellence. However, Scripture cautions us in Proverbs 3:5–6 to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding.

The danger is subtle. As we grow, gain experience, and begin to succeed, it becomes harder to discern whether we are operating by the Spirit or merely by refined natural ability. What once required prayer can slowly become routine. What once depended on God can quietly shift into self-dependence.

This is where many believers unknowingly drift not into sin, but into self-reliance.

Yielded Vessels
The solution is not to abandon our gifts, but to yield them. Like clay in the hands of a potter, we must remain soft, responsive, and surrendered to God’s shaping.

Our talents are tools, not trophies. They are instruments through which God expresses His will. The moment we begin to “own” the gift instead of stewarding it, we step out of alignment with His purpose.

A yielded heart keeps the flow of the Spirit uninterrupted.

Reduced for His Glory
The story of Gideon in Judges 7 illustrates this beautifully. Faced with an overwhelming enemy, Gideon gathered 32,000 men. But God reduced the army to just 300.

Why? So that Israel would not say, “My own hand has saved me.”

God will often reduce our visible strength to reveal His invisible power. He strips away excess so that the glory cannot be shared. In the same way, He may allow situations in our lives where our natural abilities are insufficient so that we are forced to depend on Him fully.

The Power of Waiting on God
In a fast-paced world, waiting feels uncomfortable. Yet Isaiah 40:31 promises that those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.

Waiting is not inactivity it is spiritual alignment. It is in waiting that we exchange our strength for His, our plans for His direction, and our timing for His perfect will.

When we learn to pause before acting, to listen before moving, we avoid costly mistakes that come from rushing ahead in our own wisdom.

Gifts for Service
Another critical truth is this: our gifts are not given for personal advancement, but for kingdom purpose.

1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that each believer has received a gift to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace. The moment our gifts become about recognition, platform, or applause, we lose sight of their true purpose.

God blesses what is surrendered, not what is self-exalting.

The Secret
The key to balancing the use of our gifts with reliance on the Holy Spirit lies in maintaining a humble and yielded heart.

Continue to seek God daily. Acknowledge Him in every decision. Invite Him into every area of your life even those where you feel most confident.

As you do, you will begin to experience a supernatural dimension where your natural abilities are empowered by divine strength. This is the reality behind Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Not by might. Not by skill alone. But by His Spirit working through a surrendered life.

Prayer
Father, teach me to listen to Your voice. Let every decision of mine be led by Your Spirit. In the Name of Jesus. Amen
