A great man of God once said, “What you respect will come towards you. What you disrespect will go away from you.” There is deep wisdom in this statement, especially when it comes to the workplace.
Many people desire promotion, influence, and favour at work, but few understand that honour is one of the hidden keys that opens doors. The Bible says:
“Instruct every employee to respect and honour their employers, for this attitude presents to them a clear testimony of God’s truth and renown…”
(1 Timothy 6:1–2 TPT)
In today’s work culture, respect is becoming rare. People may obey outwardly, yet inwardly carry resentment, pride, offence, and bitterness toward their superiors. However, God is concerned not only with our actions, but also with the attitude of our hearts.
Respect Is a Kingdom Principle
Respect does not mean weakness. It does not mean agreeing with everything your boss says or becoming a doormat for abuse. Rather, respect is a reflection of maturity, wisdom, and self-control.
Even a simple “Good morning,” a smile, replying politely to emails, or speaking with honour during pressure-filled situations can completely change the atmosphere around you.
Many employees destroy opportunities because of their attitude, not their skill level. Talent may get you hired, but attitude often determines how far you will go.
Joseph is a powerful example of this principle. Though he worked under difficult people and unfair systems, he maintained an excellent spirit. Whether in Potiphar’s house or in prison, he carried himself with dignity and honour. Eventually, that same spirit opened the door to the palace. (Genesis 39:2–6)
Don’t Allow Bitterness
One of the greatest dangers in the workplace is hidden bitterness. Hurt, disappointment, favouritism, office politics, and unfair treatment can slowly harden the heart.
When this happens, people stop working with joy. Their speech becomes negative. Their body language changes. Eventually, they unknowingly sabotage the very future God planned for them.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD… “plans to prosper you and not to harm you…”
(Jeremiah 29:11)
Sometimes, God uses difficult workplaces to develop patience, humility, emotional discipline, and wisdom within us. Before God promotes a person publicly, He often prepares them privately through difficult seasons.
Humility Attracts God’s Grace
Respect and honour may not always be immediately reciprocated. Some bosses may overlook your efforts or fail to appreciate your sincerity. Yet, never forget this truth:
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”(James 4:6)
Grace is divine favour. It is God causing opportunities, recommendations, and blessings to come toward you.
A truly successful employee is not merely someone who is highly skilled, but someone who carries integrity, humility, wisdom, and honour. These qualities make a person shine brightly in the workplace.
When you honour others sincerely, God Himself will honour you in due season.

Confession
I thank You Lord, that exaltation neither comes from the east nor the west or the south, but it comes from You Oh Lord. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
