Should We Quit Because Some Leader Fell?

“And let us not get tired of doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessing, if we don't get discouraged and give up.” — Galatians 6:9 (TLB)

God has given every person the power of choice. One day, each of us will stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account of the life we lived. On that day, there will be no excuses, no comparisons, and no blaming others. Every man and woman will answer for their own decisions.

Understanding this truth protects us from allowing someone else's failures to determine our own faithfulness.

Jesus Forewarned Us
Jesus gave a sobering prophecy concerning the last days:
"And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold." (Matthew 24:12)

Biblical prophecy is not given merely to satisfy our curiosity about the future. It is given to prepare us for it. Jesus warned us beforehand so that when we see these things happening, our faith will remain firm rather than shaken.

Notice that He said "many" would grow cold. This is one of the distinguishing marks of the last days.

Signs That Love Has Grown Cold
A heart that is drifting away from God often reveals itself long before a person completely walks away. Some of the warning signs include:

  1. A passive attitude toward the things of God.
  2. A growing reluctance to attend church or fellowship with other believers.
  3. Living according to feelings rather than God's Word.
  4. Increasing doubt toward the things of God.
  5. Little desire to pray, fast, or study the Scriptures.
  6. A pattern of disobedience to God's commands.
Spiritual decline is usually gradual, not sudden.

Others' Failure Is Not Your Excuse
Giving is one example. Jesus commanded His followers to give (Luke 6:38). Yet when people's love for God begins to grow cold, giving often becomes difficult.

Sometimes this is influenced by what they read online, watch in the media, or hear about the failures of Christian leaders.

But another person's disobedience never gives us permission to disobey God.

If someone else's sin causes us to neglect God's commands, then their disobedience has become our own.

Scripture reminds us that every deed is recorded before God. One day the books will be opened, and our works will testify concerning the life we lived.

Ultimately, every person will hear one of two outcomes to proceed into His eternal presence or to depart from it.

That reality should encourage us to remain faithful, regardless of what others choose to do.

Stand by Grace, Not Pride
When someone falls into sin, pride can quietly convince us that we would never make the same mistake.

But the truth is far different.

The only reason any of us are still standing is because of the grace of God.

Instead of becoming critical or self-righteous, we should pray earnestly for those who have fallen, asking God to restore them. At the same time, we must guard our own hearts so that bitterness, disappointment, or offence does not take root (Hebrews 12:15).

Do not allow the failures of others to cool your love for Christ.

You are not following Jesus because it is popular or because everyone else is doing so. You follow Him because He alone is worthy of your devotion.

Remain steadfast. Continue doing what is right. Walk in love, obey His Word, and keep your eyes fixed on Christ. In due season, if you do not lose heart, you will reap the harvest He has promised.

Prayer
Father, give me grace to be diligent, not missing Your revelation of grace. Uproot any seed of bitterness that I have entertained in my spirit man. Empower me with Your love. In Jesus' name.
