Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. 2And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another that shall not be thrown down.” (Matthew 24:1-2)
Lord Jesus' prophecy about the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem (Matthew 24:1-2) signalled a transformative shift in how Christians would experience God's presence. No longer limited to a physical building, the divine presence now dwells within each of us, making every Christian a "walking temple."
As walking temples, Christians carry God's presence with them wherever they go, transforming every encounter and experience into an opportunity to share and spread the love of God.
Just as the temple in Jerusalem consisted of three distinct parts - the outer court, the inner court, and the holy of holies - the Bible reveals that we are also made up of a body, a soul, and a spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23). This structure has deep symbolic significance, as each aspect of our being mirrors a specific part of the temple:
The Body- Outer Court: The physical body is akin to the temple's outer court, which was visible to all. Our bodies are the vessels through which we interact with the world and carry out our daily activities.
The Soul- Inner Court: Our soul, which encompasses our thoughts, emotions, and reasoning abilities, reflects the temple's inner court. Just as the seven-branched candlestick illuminated the inner court, our soul is the seat of our inner light, providing guidance and direction in our lives.
The Spirit- Holy of Holies: The human spirit is a reflection of the holy of holies, the sacred chamber where God's presence dwelt within the temple. As walking temples, our spirit is where we experience the divine presence and draw upon spiritual blessings.
Recognising the divine design of our body, soul, and spirit, we must prioritise nurturing our spiritual growth and deepening our connection with God. This involves a disciplined prayer life and daily meditation on God's Word, which strengthens our spirit and helps us become more attuned to His divine presence within us.
There stood an old lighthouse that had guided ships through treacherous waters for many years. The lighthouse keeper was a very rough man, with very rough language, always ready for a verbal spat.
One day, a powerful storm damaged the lighthouse's lantern room, shattering the glass and extinguishing the light. The lighthouse keeper knew that without the light, ships would be in grave danger. He worked tirelessly, day and night, to repair the damage and restore the light.
During his intense labours, the lighthouse keeper found an old, dusty Bible buried in a corner of the lighthouse. To pass the time during his breaks, he began to read the scriptures. The words touched his heart, and he felt a deep connection to the divine presence described within the pages.
As the days passed, the lighthouse keeper continued to read the Bible and pray, nurturing his newfound faith. He noticed a profound change within himself; his spirit seemed to be shining brighter, just like the lighthouse's light once did.
When the lighthouse keeper finally completed the repairs and rekindled the lighthouse's light, he knew that the transformation he had experienced would not only guide ships safely through the waters but also guide his own life. His spirit, like the holy of holies within the temple, had now become a dwelling place for His divine presence.
As we cultivate our spiritual life, we can experience a transformation that radiates outward from our spirit man, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. This process allows us to become more Christ-like, embodying the love, compassion, and grace of our Savior in our daily lives.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for choosing to dwell within us and making us Your walking temples. Help us to recognise the significance of this divine connection. In Jesus’ name. Amen!
