Someone wrote to me the other day and asked, “Pastor Michael, could AI be the Antichrist?” As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance and impact our day-to-day lives, there are major concerns about its potential role in the end times. Some notable individuals, such as legendary physicist Stephen Hawking and Tesla and SpaceX leader and innovator Elon Musk, have raised concerns.
This is why I thought to address this subject and will explore biblically if AI is indeed the Antichrist, as some think.
Understanding the Antichrist
The term "Antichrist" is mentioned in the New Testament, specifically in the letters of John the Apostle.
Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now, many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. (1 John 2:8)
Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:22)
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. (2 John 1:7)
It refers to a figure who will oppose Christ and deceive many during the end times. The Apostle Paul also describes a similar figure, the "man of sin" or "son of perdition," in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4.
While the Bible does not provide an explicit connection between AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the Antichrist, it is essential to understand the characteristics and actions of the Antichrist as described in Scripture.
The Antichrist as a Human Leader
The biblical descriptions of the Antichrist suggest that he will be a human leader who will rise to power, claiming to be God and leading many astray. In 2 Thessalonians 2:4, Paul writes that the man of sin "opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God."
AI (Artificial Intelligence), by its nature, is a technology created and developed by humans. It does not possess consciousness or self-awareness, and therefore, it cannot claim to be God or have any inherent spiritual attributes. While AI can be used for both good and evil purposes, it is ultimately a tool under human control.
The Deceptive Power of the Antichrist
The Antichrist is described as having great deceptive power, leading many people away from the truth. In 1 John 2:22, the Apostle John writes, "Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son."
AI, as a technology, does not have the ability to deceive on its own or deny the truth of Christ. However, it is essential to recognise that AI can be manipulated and used by individuals with malicious intent to spread false information and deceive others. As Christians, we must exercise discernment and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit to recognise the truth (John 16:13).
The Role of AI in the End Times
While AI itself is not the Antichrist, it is possible that advanced technology could play a role in the end times by enabling the spread of deception, controlling economic systems, or facilitating surveillance. The Bible warns of a global system led by the Antichrist, where no one can buy or sell without receiving a mark.
16He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:16-17). It is possible that AI could be employed by a future world leader to implement such a system.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we humbly seek Your grace to remain sober-minded and watchful, standing firm in our faith. Strengthen us, Lord, to continue steadfastly in prayer with thanksgiving and vigilance. May Your love and guidance empower us to live according to Your will. In Jesus' name. Amen
