Long for the Eternal, Not the Temporary

Remember Lot’s wife. (Luke 17:32)

The Bible is filled with stories that are not just historical accounts but profound lessons wrapped in the fabric of human experiences. One such sad story is of Lot’s wife—a story of a missed opportunity, a longing for the past, and a life-altering decision.

The city of Sodom was destined for destruction due to its wickedness, but God, in His mercy, provided Lot and his family a chance to escape. Amidst this divine rescue operation, a clear command was given: "Do not look back" (Genesis 19:17). Yet, as fire rained down, Lot’s wife made a choice that sealed her fate: she looked back.

This wasn't a mere glance; it was, as we understand, a look of longing. Perhaps she mourned the life she was leaving, the comforts of her home, or the familiarity of the city. Her attachment to the temporary pleasures of Sodom cost her the blessing of a future.

Lord Jesus instructs us in Matthew 5:13, "You are the salt of the earth." Salt preserves enhances flavor, and has an enduring quality. Christians, like salt, are meant to bring preservation to the world by sharing the good news, adding flavour by living lives of love and joy, and standing firm in faith amidst adversity.

But there is a clear irony in Lot's wife. While she should have been a preserving influence like salt, she instead became an immobile pillar of salt—a stark reminder of the dangers of longing for what's behind us.

Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:13-14, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Our spiritual journey demands that we not get entangled in the comforts or allure of our past but that we press on with our eyes fixed on the eternal prize.

Colossians 3:2 echoes this sentiment: "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Our life on Earth is transient, a mere blink compared to eternity. When we anchor our hearts in the eternal truths of God and strive for a life that reflects His glory, we truly become the salt, making a difference in the world.

Remembering Lot's wife is more than just remembering a tragic ending; it's an urgent call to reflection. Where are our affections? What do we long for? The comforts and attractions of this world can be overwhelming, but they pale in comparison to the glory that awaits us in Christ.

Every time we resist the lure of the world, stand firm in faith amidst trials, or shine as beacons of God’s love, we reaffirm our role as the true "salt of the earth." We become witnesses not just in words but in deeds, guiding others towards the eternal love of Christ.

Today, let us take a moment to assess where we stand. Are we looking back, longing for things that don't align with God's purpose for us? Or are we firmly anchored in Christ, ready to make a difference, and yearning for the eternal?
