Relationships
Relationships are an integral part of our lives, and as Christians, it's essential to understand how to build and nurture them according to God's plan. Our perfect example in this regard is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. During His time on Earth, Lord Jesus had a crucial mission to accomplish, and He knew that the right relationships would play a significant role in fulfilling the Father's will.
One of the key aspects of Jesus' approach to relationships was prayer. He consistently sought the Father's guidance in choosing the people He would invest in and spend time with. As Luke 6:12-13 tells us, "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles."
Jesus' reliance on prayer in building relationships teaches us a valuable lesson. We must seek God's wisdom and direction when it comes to the people we allow into our lives. Proverbs 13:20 reminds us, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." By prayerfully considering our relationships, we can avoid unnecessary heartache and surround ourselves with individuals who will encourage us in our faith and support us in fulfilling God's purposes.
However, even with prayer and discernment, not all relationships will be easy or pain-free. The story of Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, illustrates this truth. Despite being hand-picked by Jesus, Judas ultimately betrayed the Lord. In John 17:12, Jesus prayed, "While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled."
This seemingly difficult relationship between Jesus and Judas serves as a reminder that sometimes, even the most challenging relationships can serve a purpose in God's grand plan. As Romans 8:28 assures us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." While we may not always understand the reasons behind certain relationships, we can trust that God is using them to shape us and fulfil His will.
As we navigate the complexities of relationships, it's crucial to remember that every God-ordained connection has an unseen enemy. The Bible warns us in Ephesians 6:12, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." This is why it's essential to cover our relationships daily with the blood of Jesus and pray for God's protection and strength.
Moreover, we must actively invest in our relationships, just as Lord Jesus did with His disciples. He spent time teaching, mentoring, and sharing life with them. As Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." By intentionally pouring into the lives of others and allowing them to do the same for us, we create an environment where relationships can thrive and bring glory to God.
Ultimately, the foundation of all our relationships should be our connection with Christ. As we abide in Him and allow His love to flow through us, we become better equipped to love and serve others. John 15:5 reminds us, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing."
So then, building the right relationships requires prayer, discernment, and a deep reliance on God. By following Jesus' example and covering our connections with His blood, we can cultivate relationships that honour Him and contribute to the advancement of His Kingdom. Let us commit to being intentional in our relationships, trusting that God will use them to refine us and fulfil His perfect will.
