Workplace
In today's competitive work environment, many people strive to become stars in their workplace. They seek recognition, promotions, and success. However, the path to becoming a true star in the eyes of God is not always the same as the world's definition of success. Let's explore what the Bible teaches about excelling in our work and gaining favor from the Lord.
The Importance of Character
"The LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'" (1 Samuel 16:7)
God places a higher value on our character than our outward appearance or accomplishments. When seeking to become a star in the workplace, it's essential to develop a heart that is pleasing to God. This means cultivating integrity, humility, and a strong work ethic.
The Danger of Being a People-Pleaser
"Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God." (Colossians 3:22)
When the cat’s away, the mice are at play' which is true even at the workplace. When the boss is away, the staff will sway. However, this attitude is insincere and hypocritical. God calls us to work with sincerity of heart, not just to impress others. When we work to please God rather than men, we demonstrate true character and integrity.
The Example of Jacob
"Then the LORD said to Jacob, 'Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.'" (Genesis 31:3)
Jacob's story illustrates the importance of working diligently, even in difficult circumstances. Despite being mistreated by his boss, Laban, Jacob remained faithful in his work. He trusted that his promotion and success would come from God, not man. As a result, God blessed Jacob and called him to return to his homeland, where he would become a great nation.
Working as Unto the Lord
"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24)
The key to becoming a star in the workplace is to work as unto the Lord. This means putting our best effort into every task, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. When we work with excellence and diligence, we honour God and demonstrate our love for Him. Our motivation should be to please God, not just to earn recognition or rewards from others.
Trusting God for Promotion
"For exaltation comes neither from the east nor from the west nor from the south. But God is the Judge: He puts down one and exalts another." (Psalm 75:6-7)
Ultimately, our success and promotion come from God. When we trust Him and seek to please Him in our work, He will open doors and grant us favour. Even if our earthly bosses fail to recognise our efforts, we can have confidence that God sees our faithfulness and will reward us in due time.
So then, becoming a star in the workplace is not about seeking the applause of men but rather about working diligently as unto the Lord. When we prioritise character, resist the temptation to be people-pleasers, and trust God for our promotion, we can find true success and fulfilment in our work.
Confession
I will lift up my eyes to the hills from where comes my help. My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth, the author and finisher of my faith. (Psalm 121:1-2) (Hebrews 12:2)
