"He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." (Revelation 3:5)
In ancient times cities kept a register of their citizens; and when a man died, his name was removed from the register. The risen Christ is saying that, if we wish to remain on the roll of the citizens of God, we must keep our faith flamingly alive.
There is a Book of Life, and it will be opened and referenced on the Day of Judgement. This means that the Book of Life is real, and will be read.
And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. (Revelation 20:12)
In Revelation 3:5, Jesus makes a powerful promise to those who overcome: "I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life." The Book of Life is a heavenly record of those who belong to God and have eternal life. Let's explore the significance of having our names written in this book.
Throughout the Bible, we see references to the Book of Life. In Exodus 32:32-33, Moses intercedes for the people of Israel, asking God to forgive their sin or blot him out of the book. In Psalm 69:28, David prays for God to erase the names of the wicked from the Book of Life. In Philippians 4:3, Apostle Paul mentions his fellow workers whose names are in the Book of Life.
Having our names written in the Book of Life is not something we earn through our own efforts. It is a result of placing our faith in Jesus Christ and accepting His gift of salvation. Revelation 13:8 describes those whose names are not written in the book as those who worship the beast. In contrast, those who belong to Christ have the assurance that their names are securely recorded in heaven.
The promise that Jesus will never blot out the names of overcomers from the Book of life is a powerful encouragement. It speaks of the eternal security we have in Christ. Once we are His, nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39). Our salvation is not based on our performance but on the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
Have you placed your faith in Jesus Christ, trusting Him alone for your salvation? If so, rejoice in the assurance that your name is written in the Book of Life. If you have never made this decision, today is the day to embrace His gift of eternal life. For those who are believers, take comfort in the promise that Jesus will never blot out your name. Let this truth fill you with peace and confidence as you face the challenges of life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for writing my name in the book of life. May I never take for granted the incredible gift of salvation You have given me. Help me to live each day in the joy and security of knowing I belong to You forever. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
