Roots
His roots are dried out below,
And his branch withers above. (Job 18:16)
The root is the ‘unseen’ part of the plant, and the branch is the ‘seen’.
Likewise, if your spiritual life (the ‘unseen’) is not prospering, then whatever you work at (the ‘seen’) will not have the life of God in it. It will not prosper but wither away.
Many focus their attention only on what is seen - the obvious. However, the Bible helps us see the importance of knowing origins, sources, and root causes in all areas of life.
And even now, the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. (Matthew 3:10)
When Lord Jesus Christ described the ministry of John the Baptist, He used the analogy of an axe that was laid to the root of the tree. Lord Jesus wants us not to focus only on the symptoms or the quick fixes but rather focus on solving the problem by attacking the root.
Dealing with the symptoms may bring relief for some time, but the problem may crop again and again when you begin to believe the lie of the devil that this problem was meant to be in your life.
On the other hand, dealing with the root often will seem painful and a lengthy process. But the fact remains that it will change us in ways that will bring a lasting difference, so we don’t revisit the same problems over and over again.
The Lord said, “Yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.” (Amos 2:9)
When you allow God to deal with the roots, the fruit is also destroyed. There will be lasting deliverance.
And his branch withers above. (Job 18:16)
