But Peter followed at a distance (Luke 22:54)
There are some that walk with Jesus, and then there are those that follow Jesus at a distance. I am not talking about physical closeness. Some were very close to Jesus physically, but their hearts were far away from Him. (Matthew 15:8)
Have you heard of the saying, “So close and yet so far”? You could be sitting right in church and yet be far away from the Lord of the Church.
Like Peter, there are many Christians that are following Jesus but from a distance. They have not renounced Jesus. It’s just that they are not enthusiastic and excited about following Him.
What is it that caused Peter to follow Jesus at a distance? I think it is safe to conclude that Peter did not really understand what was happening to his beloved leader. He was more than just a leader – He was the Saviour.
When it is hard to understand what God is doing, it is tempting to stay at a distance from Jesus. It’s our choice to closely walk with Jesus even when it does not make sense or following Him at a distance. However, scripture constantly challenges us to draw near to God and not distance ourselves from Him. (James 4:8)
Are you following Jesus at a distance? Have you allowed the distance to keep you from trusting Him? Has your distance caused you to start denying Jesus by not living fully for Him? The good news is that Jesus has not stopped loving you and wants to restore your fellowship with Him. Jesus restored Peter, and after that, Peter never looked back again. (John 21:15-19). When Jesus restored Peter, He said, “Follow Me” (John 21:19).

Prayer
Lord Jesus, give me the grace to keep Your Word in all situations so that I may follow you closely daily. Amen
