Chapter 5

Book / 19 / 1864 chapter - 5
836
1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
listen carefully to my wise counsel.
2 Then you will show discernment,
and your lips will express what you’ve learned. (Proverbs 5:1-2)

The catalyst for the formation of immoral relationships is almost always made by what is said or communicated. This demonstrates the critical need of both men and women to guard their words and communication with those of the other sex.

For the lips of a loose woman drip honey as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil; (Proverbs 5:3)

Honey is delicious, and oil is pleasant, and these are the temptations of immorality represented by honey and oil.

But in the end, she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword. (Proverbs 5:4)

Notice the change from honey to wormwood and oil to a two-edged sword. This is how a relationship with an immoral woman turns out in the end.

Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of hell. (Proverbs 5:5)

After promising to provide life and joy, the immoral lady really ends up snatching it away.

Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house, (Proverbs 5:8)

What to Do When Tempted?
1. Do whatever is necessary to get away from what is tempting you.

Joseph’s master’s wife burned with lust for him because he was a good looking man. She continued her sexual advances towards him day after day. One day she cornered him. “Lie with me,” she said. Rather than entertain her offer, “he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house” (Genesis 39:6–12).

Apostle Paul wrote to young Timothy, “flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness” (2 Timothy 2:22). Do whatever is necessary to get away from what is tempting you.

2. Avoid the very scenes of temptation
We cannot keep the tempter from tempting, but we must develop a plan not to go near his den (Proverbs 5:8). Develop an intentional plan to “make no provision for the desires of the flesh.” in order to guard your walk with the Lord (Romans 13:14).

Saying, “Oh, why didn’t I do what they told me?
Why did I reject a disciplined life?
Why didn’t I listen to my mentors,
or take my teachers seriously?
My life is ruined! (Proverbs 5:12-14 MSG)

The pain of regret is greater than the pain of discipline. Enduring intimacy is better than a cheap thrill.

God is light. In Him, there is no darkness. To really stand in His presence, we too must be like Him - light. Or else every sin in our lives will cast a shadow. A new creation has no shadow. God does not have a shadow. The shadow of your sin will overtake you;

Death is the reward of an undisciplined life;
Life is the reward of a disciplined life (Proverbs 5:23 Paraphrased)
