For, as I can bear witness, [they gave] according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability; and [they did it] voluntarily, (2 Corinthians 8:3)
- [they gave] according to their ability
- beyond their ability
- [they did it] voluntarily, Also, that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as a grudging obligation. (2 Corinthians 9:5)
1.Generosity isn’t based on abundance.
Many think we would give more only if we had more. But in reality, if we are not giving out of what we currently have, then we will never give when there is more at our disposal.
The Macedonian Christians had nothing extra to give. Although they were living in poverty and going through great affliction, they had an abundance of joy and a wealth of liberality (2 Corinthians 8:2). They voluntarily gave not only what they could afford but even beyond their ability (2 Corinthians 8:3).
2.Generosity flows from a heart of compassion.
Maybe the reason the Macedonians were so generous in their giving was because they knew what it was like to be in need and had experienced God’s faithfulness to them.
Once they heard about the saints in Jerusalem, their hearts overflowed with compassion, and they urged Paul for the honor of participating in their support. (2 Corinthians 8:4).
And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God. (2 Corinthians 8:5)
they first gave themselves to the Lord….then to us
First, you need to give yourself to the Lord and then give, then serve
But as you abound in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us—see that you abound in this grace also. (2 Corinthians 8:7)
Apostle Paul uses the word “grace” to describe giving here in chapter 8 as well as chapter 9. Everything we have and do is according to God’s grace. The reason we live is because of grace and so the reason we give is because of grace. Giving is a grace that we need to abound in.
You were so eager in your intentions to give, so go do it. Finish this act of worship according to your ability to give. (2 Corinthians 8:11 TPT)
