Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, (Exodus 31:1-3)
The Holy Spirit of God must equip and assist us to perform the task, whether it's building the tabernacle in the Old Testament, the church in the New Testament, or our lives and ministries today.
“And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you: (Exodus 31:6)
God not only provided Bezalel and Oholiab the expertise and wisdom they required, but He also equipped the artisans who worked under them, and they built the tabernacle and its furnishings, led by the Spirit and in obedience to the Word of God.
“Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you. (Exodus 31:13)
To the Israelites, God revealed Himself as the Lord who sanctifies. To sanctify means to purify and consecrate. Because God was in the midst of giving them the instructions for building the tabernacle, the Israelites would soon become quite familiar with the concept of sanctification.
God outlined several rites for purifying the priests, the tabernacle, and the utensils within the tabernacle before they were used in these instructions. These commandments were given by God to demonstrate that He is the holy God, perfect in goodness and righteousness, and that the tabernacle, as His dwelling place, was holy.
As a result, before any sinful man could approach God's holy presence in His holy dwelling place, he had to be made holy first.
Today, we are sanctified…
– by the study of God’s Word. (John 17:17; 1 Peter 2:2-3)
– by our abiding in Christ and thereby bearing fruit. (John 15:3-4)
– by the renewal of our minds. (Ephesians 4:22-24)
– by trials. (James 1:2-4)
And when He had made an end of speaking with him on Mount Sinai, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God. (Exodus 31:18)
