Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Mount Seir and prophesy against it, (Ezekiel 35:1-2)
Mount Seir was a center of the Edomites, the descendants of Jacob’s brother Esau. This is a prophecy against the Edomites.
“Because you have had an ancient hatred, and have shed the blood of the children of Israel by the power of the sword at the time of their calamity, when their iniquity came to an end (Ezekiel 35:5)
Edom heads the list of Israel's enemies in Psalm 83. From the days of Esau himself, a burning hatred of Israel has been nourished among the Edomites.
God spoke through Prophet Amos saying, "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and cast off all pity; his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath forever" (Amos 1:11).
If any people would form and lead a confederacy against the Israelites in the end times, it would be Edom.
Poison isn’t always something you eat or drink – it can be an emotion. And hate is one of them, eating you up inside and causing destruction. Hate undealt will pollute your spirit and poison your soul. Just like rain water seeping into soil, hate unchecked easily seeps into all of the relationships that surround us.
While hate can be directed at almost anything – animals, foods, jobs, movies – the most destructive is hatred toward other people.
Edom’s hatred towards Israel is what triggered the judgement of God against it. (Ezekiel 35:6-9)
“Because you have said, ‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and we will possess them,’ although the Lord was there, (Ezekiel 35:10)
When the Babylonian armies came against Judah and Jerusalem, the Edomites used this opportunity to enlarge their own territory. Instead of helping their brother, they took undue advantage of Israel’s crisis.
They forgot that even though the Jews were temporarily exiled out of the land, the LORD was there (Jehovah Shammah). He would guard and preserve His land against the parasites.
“I will do according to your anger and according to the envy which you showed in your hatred against them; and I will make Myself known among them when I judge you. (Ezekiel 35:11)
This stands as a great reminder for any nation on this earth coming against the Lord’s people - Israel.
