And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to the children of Israel, and get from them a rod from each father’s house, all their leaders according to their fathers’ houses—twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod. (Numbers 17:1-2)
The rods that the leaders brought were dry dead sticks disconnected from their source. They had certainly lost their capacity to grow and bear fruit. Aaron’s rod was also among the other rods and was in a similar situation.
But at the touch of God Aaron’s rod literally came back to life. We could say it was resurrected from the dead, which is exactly the sort of thing God still does today with men and women who come to Him.
This miracle points out to the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection. It also points out to the moment when all who know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour will be made new, and will rise to meet Him in the air.
Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds. (Numbers 17:8)
