Example of Rash Oaths
But the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had caused them to take an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food before evening and until I have taken vengeance on my enemies. So none of the men tasted any food. (1 Samuel 14:24)
And when Saul saw any strong man or any valiant man, he took him for himself. (1 Samuel 14:52)
Saul constantly recruited for his army. This is a great example of team building.
Our Associations Matter to God
Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother: The mention of Ichabod seems almost unnecessary. Why would we need to know that the priest with Saul, Ahijah, was the nephew of Ichabod?
With whom you associate matters. Evil company corrupts good habits. (1 Corinthians 15:33). The reverse is also true. Good company enhances good habits.
Armour Bearer
When Jonathan suggested they climb up after them, the armor-bearer never flinched. “Do all that is in your heart,” he told Jonathan. “I am with you, according to your heart” (v.7). So the two climbed the cliff, and with God’s help they overcame the enemy (vv.8-14). We have to admire this courageous young armor-bearer. He lugged the armor up that cliff and stayed with Jonathan, following along behind and killing those Jonathan wounded.
