“And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying…”— Joshua 4:1 (NKJV)
Notice the timing here. God did not speak while they were in the middle of the Jordan. He didn’t speak when they just approached it. He spoke after they had fully crossed over.
This tells us something profound: There are certain divine instructions reserved for the other side of your obedience. There are words from the Lord that await your next step, your faith move, your transition.
God Waits for Your Move
I believe the Lord had already spoken much to Joshua before this. He had been encouraged, empowered, and commissioned (see Joshua 1:1–9). But now—after the crossing—God was about to release a word that had never been spoken before. A groundbreaking instruction that would mark a new chapter for the people of Israel.
Could it be that God is waiting to speak to you too?
There might be something you've been praying to hear—a confirmation, a new direction, a deeper revelation. But perhaps Heaven is silent because you're still standing on the wrong side of your Jordan.
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (ESV)
The Jordan: A Place of Transition
Remember this: Jordan is not just a river; it is a place of transition.
In Hebrew, the word "Jordan" (יַרְדֵּן – Yarden) means "to descend" or "to go down." This implies a lowering of self before a lifting by God—a theme repeated throughout scripture.
The Jordan was no ordinary location. This is the very place where:
- Elijah was taken up into heaven (2 Kings 2:11).
- Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit (2 Kings 2:9).
- Naaman was healed of leprosy after dipping in the Jordan seven times (2 Kings 5:14).
- Lord Jesus was baptised by John, and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove (Matthew 3:13–17).
All these instances have one thing in common: transformation happened at the Jordan.
Let that sink in.
Could it be that you're standing on the edge of your own Jordan, unsure whether to cross, hesitant to trust?
But remember: What God has prepared for you lies on the other side.
A Word That Follows Obedience
“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.” — Isaiah 1:19 (NKJV)
Some divine revelations are unlocked only through obedience. Think of it like a parent saying to a child, “I’ll tell you the rest once you do what I asked.” Many believers wait for a word, but God is waiting for obedience.
In Joshua’s case, crossing the Jordan was the act of obedience that unlocked the next divine instruction.
Similarly:
- Abraham didn’t receive the full promise until he separated from Lot (Genesis 13:14).
- Moses heard God's voice only after turning aside to the burning bush (Exodus 3:4).
- Peter caught a miraculous number of fish only after casting the net at Jesus’ word (Luke 5:5–6).
Dont you ever forget this:
- Some words require obedience.
- Some words require separation.
- Some words require a transition.
God might be saying to you today:
“My son, My daughter, I have something to say—but first, you must cross over.”
Separate Yourself
“Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.” — 2 Corinthians 6:17 (NKJV)
Some words are not released until we let go of certain associations, distractions, or patterns. Just like Abraham had to part ways with Lot to get further direction from God, we too may need to let go in order to hear clearly.
Could it be that the static you're experiencing in your spiritual life is because God is calling you to a new level of consecration?
The Silence Before the Storm of Glory
God's silence is not always His absence. Sometimes it's the holy stillness before the next instruction. A divine pause.
Don’t misinterpret the silence.
He may be waiting for you to:
- Leave the comfort zone.
- Cross the intimidating waters.
- Trust even when the path looks uncertain.
And once you’ve crossed, you’ll hear that voice again.
“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” — Jeremiah 33:3 (NKJV)
Let’s Reflect
- What is your personal Jordan?
- What transition is God calling you to make?
- What have you been delaying that could unlock the next word from Heaven?
Don't delay. Cross over. Obey. Separate. Because on the other side, a fresh word awaits.
