(Read Matthew 1:1-17)
Matthew’s purpose in recording the genealogy was twofold:
- To demonstrate the continuity between the Israel of the Old Testament and Jesus
- To demonstrate Jesus’ royal lineage (Son of David) and His link with the founder of the Jewish race (Son of Abraham)
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham
The Gospel of Matthew presents Lord Jesus as ‘King’ hence it begins as: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham” Notice carefully, David is placed before Abraham.
The Old Testament prophesied that the Messiah would be the Son of David; in the very first sentence, Matthew points to Jesus as the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy.
Matthew not only connected Jesus to David, but back yet further to Abraham. Jesus is the Seed of Abraham in whom all nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3).
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:20)
While he (Joseph) thought about these things, behold an angel of the Lord appeared:
Our thoughts have the potential to move heaven or hell to action. Notice, as Joseph even thought about these things, heaven moved into action. What do you regularly meditate on
an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream:
Angels can appear to you in your dreams. In the same manner, demons can also appear to you in your dreams. The spiritual realm is open to you in your dreams. You can listen to what is being said in your dreams. Your spirit does the listening.
and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. (Matthew 1:25)
“and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son”
This indicates that Joseph and Mary had a normal husband and wife relationship after the birth of Lord Jesus.
