And the Lord said to Moses, “Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” (Exodus 17:5-6)
In the above scriptures, God told Moses to strike a rock so that water would flow to satisfy the thirst of the Israelites. This points out to the crucifixion of Christ and it also shows us Christ as the supplier of all our needs. The water that flowed from the rock that was struck symbolizes all that we need in life, be it health, prosperity, better relationships, a new job...Whatever we need flows from Jesus our Rock.
How do we know that the rock represents Jesus? In 1 Corinthians 10:4, Apostle Paul tells us that the rock was Christ:
and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ
Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. (Exodus 17:8)
The children of Israel were in the will of God. God Himself was leading them. Then why were attacked! Following after God doesn’t mean you’re free from attack, but you are free from defeat.
And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” (Exodus 17:9)
Intercession is another key to seeing miracles. Team ministry. Joshua fighting – Moses interceding – Aaron and Hur supporting ministry
Notice Joshua was also a man who knew what it was to be in the presence of God. He was a man of the Presence.
And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner (Exodus 17:15).
In the Old Testament, there are sixteen compound names of YHVH (Yahweh). Here we see that Moses, the man of God called the name of the altar Jehovah-nissi. The word nissi is the Hebrew word for "banner." It identifies God as the One who fights our battles!
