I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. (Psalm 18:3)
David said, “I will call upon the Lord”. Calling upon the Lord refers to prayer. There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” If you can learn to pray in the right manner, it will be a blessing not only for you and your family but for the generations that follow you.
Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call to Me and I will answer you.” This simply means that if we don’t call to the Lord, He will not answer.
1.What will happen when we call upon the Lord?
Jeremiah 33:3 (b) says, “I (God) will show you great and mighty things, which you do not know”
God is no respecter of persons. Whoever you are - rich or poor. If you call upon the name of the Lord:
a).He will show you things
Most of us pray but very often we are not sure or rather not confident that God has really heard us. Let’s say you are praying for a house and when you have prayed the Lord shows you in a dream or a vision where your house is and other details? This is the prophetic dimension of prayer.
This will birth you in a level of faith and confidence in God that will be noteworthy. Even if there is a delay in the house coming, you will not be shaken or moved. This is because the Lord has shown you already. This is the prophetic dimension of prayer.
2.who is worthy to be praised (Psalm 18:3)
Always begin prayer with praise. Praise also brings God on the scene. This drives away the enemy
3.You will saved from your enemies (Psalm 18:3)
The third thing that will happen when you call upon the Lord is:
Enemies can be physical or spiritual enemies (like demonic forces). Prayer will bring deliverance to you and your loved ones from enemies (seen and unseen)
He made darkness His secret place (Psalm 18:11)
There is no light there.
The Lord Himself is the light. We have to totally walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Cor 5:7)
Even in the tabernacle there was no light in the Holiest of Holies
With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful; With a blameless man You will show Yourself blameless; With the pure You will show Yourself pure; And with the devious You will show Yourself shrewd. 27 For You will save the humble people, But will bring down haughty looks. (Psalm 18:25-27)
With the merciful You will show Yourself merciful: David understood a basic principle of God’s dealing with men; that God often treats a man in the same way that he treats others.
Jesus explained this principle in the Sermon on
the Mount: For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the
measure you use, it will be measured back to you (Matthew 7:2). Human nature
wants to use a small measure of mercy with others, but expect a large measure
of mercy from God. Jesus told us to expect the same measure from God that we
give to others.
For You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28)
Man is essentially divided into three parts. Man is a spirit, has a soul and lives in a body. (1 Thessalonians 5:23) The human spirit is referred to as ‘my lamp’ in this verse. The following verse makes it clear.
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart. (Proverbs 20:27)
Now with this understanding, let us read Psalm 18:28
For You will light my spirit man; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. (Psalm 18:28)
It is crucial that your spirit man is enlightened. Let me tell you why?
God uses your human spirit to bring revelation and understanding of things you don't know naturally.
