In this Psalm, David first describes the rebellious sinner (verses 1-4), then the blessedness of the righteous man (verses 5-9), and concludes with a prayer that the righteous man may be protected from the wicked (verses 10-12).
There is no fear of God before his eyes. (Psalm 36:1)
Apostle Paul quoted this verse in Romans 3:18
When Abraham traveled to the land of Gerar, he discerned that the people of that land did not fear God and that is why he said, “Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife” (Genesis 20:11). What is the fear of God? It is a deep respect for the Holy Almighty God. It is a healthy and godly means of avoiding sin. Scripture clearly tells us that a reverential fear of God suppresses evil in the land.
The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit;
He has ceased to be wise and to do good. (Psalm 36:3)
Out of the abundance of his heart, his mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34)
He devises wickedness on his bed;
He sets himself in a way that is not good;
He does not abhor evil. (Psalm 36:4)
Even when he is supposed to be resting in bed, his evil mind and heart are plotting his moves for the next day. This man does not hate evil, in fact, nothing is too bad for him to do, if he thinks it will profit him.
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. (Psalm 36:7)
“The shadow of Your wings”: Although some see this as a reference to the wings of the cherubim over the Ark, it is probably more of a reference to the protective care of a parent bird for its young chicks.
The comforting image of God as a mother bird sheltering her young chicks beneath her wings is found throughout the Psalms (17:8; 57:1; 61:4; 91:4).
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, (Psalm 36:8)
God’s house (the church) must have His fullness. Only then will people leave satisfied
They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house,
And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. (Psalm 36:8)
The river, that we are to drink from, is the river that flows from the throne of God. Lord Jesus told the Samaritan woman at the well that if she drank of this water, she would never thirst again. The tree that we are to eat from and the river are both in heaven, as we read in the following verses.
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (Revelation 22:1-2)
