Six Important Lessons to Learn from Psalm 139
A]: God Knows us Intimately
O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
2You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
3You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
4For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
5You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me. (Psalm 139:1-5)
God doesn’t simply look at the outside appearances of a person, but He goes down deep to the tiniest detail of our existence. He isn’t satisfied with just knowing our name; He wants to know who we really are.
Being intimately known by our sovereign God does not mean that we should hide from Him in any way. The sacrifice Jesus made on the cross negated the shame that compelled Adam and Eve to hide from God in the garden.
B]: God is Everywhere With Us
7Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
9If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me;
12Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You,
But the night shines as the day;
The darkness and the light are both alike to You. (Psalm 139: 7-12)
God is omnipresent. There is no place where He is not present. One of the biggest tricks and deceits of our enemy is to isolate and convince us we are alone.
It’s not just that God is everywhere
He is everywhere with us.
In the mid-1600s, pastor and poet John Donne wrote, “You just can’t get away from God. If you run from Him, He runs after you. If you run to Him, He embraces you. But wherever you are, and wherever you go, His eyes of love will follow you.”
The good news is that there will never be any circumstance where you and I are too far from God to be able to receive His help! Knowing and receiving this truth deep into your spirit should eliminate the fear and anxiety in your life.
C]: We Are Purposefully Made
13For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvellous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
16Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book, they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them. (Psalm 139: 13-16)
God does not only know us when we have already existed, but He has already known our way before we were born. We were made with a purpose: to bring glory to God. Each talent, gift, and occupation has a place in the workforce of the Kingdom of God.
We are so marvellously and incredibly designed that we can distinguish between 8 million colours and 350,000 different tones. Modern science and research have only amplified David’s conclusion of “marvellous” many times over.
Have you entertained feelings of inferiority complex, thinking you are not good-looking enough, etc.? Again, you need to receive this revelation into your spirit that you have been fearfully and wonderfully made.
D]: God Has Amazing Plans for Us
17How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!
How great is the sum of them!
18If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand;
When I awake, I am still with You. (Psalm 139: 17-18)
God’s thoughts to us are mentioned in Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Sometimes, you may feel that your life is not going anywhere but know that the LORD has plans for you that you cannot even imagine, believing this will manifest those plans in your life.
E]: Judgement Belongs to God
19Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God!
Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.
20For they speak against You wickedly;
Your enemies take Your name in vain. (Psalm 139:19-20)
A person who speaks wickedly against God and takes Him in vain is considered an enemy of God.
This is not personal vindictiveness. It is a prophetic revelation of what will happen in the end times when God will deal with all His enemies.
F]: We Must Ask God for Guidance
23Search me, O God, and know my heart;
Try me, and know my anxieties;
24And see if there is any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24)
David recognized how incompetent humans are in estimating themselves. He knows how poor we are in examining ourselves, and without God’s help, we can fall under the delusion that everything is okay. We might think that we are already good enough, but the truth is we are not.
So, he invited God to search him and reveal anything offensive. The implied understanding is that David would repent of those sins in order that God might “lead [him] along the path of everlasting life” (Psalm 139:24).
