You have brought a vine out of Egypt;
You have cast out the nations and planted it. (Psalm 80:8)
In the Old Testament, Israel is often depicted as a vine. This vine was transplanted from Egypt into the Promised Land. Once in Canaan, God took care of the vine and cleared the way for it by driving out the Canaanite nations. He planted it and watched over it.
Why have You broken down her hedges,
So that all who pass by the way pluck her fruit? (Psalm 80:12)
Without God's protection, the land of Israel was vulnerable to being attacked and taken over by her enemies.
Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You made strong for Yourself. (Psalm 80:17)
This is a prayer to God, asking Him to protect and strengthen a particular person, who is referred to as the "man of Your right hand" and the "son of man."
The phrase "man of Your right hand" is a metaphor used throughout the Bible to refer to someone favoured or chosen by God. In ancient times, the right hand was seen as a symbol of strength and authority, and so to be at God's right hand was to be in a position of honour and privilege. In this verse, the psalmist asks God to extend His protection and strength to this favoured individual.
The only person who can be truly said to be at the right hand of God is Lord Jesus, the Messiah.
Revive us, and we will call upon Your name. (Psalm 80:18)
As we go through life, there can be times when we become spiritually dry and disconnected from God. As a result, we may feel distant from Him or like we have lost our passion for Him. In times like these, it can be helpful to remember the words of Psalm 80:18: "Revive us, and we will call upon Your name."
And when we ask God to revive us, we also promise to turn to Him and call upon His name. This is also a very good prayer to pray before one engages in prayer.
