David’s Oath
Surely I will not go into the chamber of my house,
Or go up to the comfort of my bed;
4I will not give sleep to my eyes
Or slumber to my eyelids,
5Until I find a place for the Lord,
A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.” (Psalm 132:3-5)
In the heart of his grand palace, amidst its splendour, King David felt a pang of guilt. Here he was, living in opulence, while God's presence resided in a simple tent. Eager to address this disparity, David sought counsel from the prophet Nathan, hoping to build a majestic temple worthy of the Almighty. Initially, the prophet Nathan gave his blessing. However, in a divine twist, God soon revealed to Nathan that it wasn't David's destiny to construct this temple. Instead, that honour would fall to David's son, Solomon. (2 Samuel 7).
Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah;
We found it in the fields of the woods [the fields of Jaar]. (Psalm 132:6)
These verses recall the journey of the Ark, which had been moved from place to place since the days of Joshua. Ephrathah is another name for Bethlehem, and "fields of Jaar" refers to Kiriath-jearim, where the Ark stayed for a while.
For Your servant David’s sake,
Do not turn away the face of Your [b]Anointed.
11The Lord has sworn in truth to David;
He will not turn from it:
“I will set upon your throne the fruit of your body. (Psalm 132:10-11)
This is a heartfelt plea for God to keep His promises to David. The "anointed one" can refer to the reigning king, a descendant of David, or it could prophetically allude to Jesus, the ultimate Anointed One.
For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His dwelling place: (Psalm 132:13)
Out of all the vast and wondrous places on Earth, God selected Zion as the grand stage for His awe-inspiring drama of redemption. While His divine presence is boundless, extending far beyond Jerusalem and the contours of Israel, there's an undeniable allure to the fact that Zion was His desired location - a place He calls home. A place of such significance, it seems, was destined to be the canvas for God's masterstroke.
