When I kept silent [before I confessed], my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. (Psalm 32:3)
This silence is a stubborn resistance to admitting the sin with the hope that in time the sin would be forgotten and the penalty would go away.
For day and night, Your hand [of displeasure] was heavy upon me; my moisture was turned into the drought of summer. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! (Psalm 32:4)
A lack of confession of sin makes the bones waste away. Could it be that sin literally affects the bones? On a spiritual level, a lack of confession displeases the LORD. Moisture is a symbolic reference to the anointing that can dry up when we have not acknowledged our sin before the Lord.
For this [forgiveness] let everyone who is godly pray—pray to You in a time when You may be found; surely when the great waters [of trial] overflow, they shall not reach [the spirit in] him. (Psalm 32:6)
A sign of godliness is reflected by how much you spend time in prayer.
Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you. (Psalm 32:9)
People who lack understanding do not draw near to the Lord unless they are disciplined. God does not want His people to be like the horse and the mule which need to be disciplined if they are to go in a particular direction. He expects His people to respond promptly to the instruction of His Word.
