In You, O Lord, I put my trust;
Let me never be ashamed;
Deliver me in Your righteousness. (Psalm 31:1)
In the 16th Century, a German monk and seminary professor named Martin Luther came across this verse Psalm 31:1
Luther continued to meditate on this passage in Psalms and also read Romans 1:17: For in it [the gospel], the righteousness of God is revealed. The Holy Spirit gave Luther an understanding of what the righteousness of God revealed by the gospel was - a righteousness that was given to the sinner who put his trust in Lord Jesus Christ.
Into Your hand, I commit my spirit (Psalm 31:5)
Lord Jesus quoted Psalm 31:5 on the cross
“And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.” (Luke 23:46)
Stephen, the first martyr of the church too quoted Psalm 31:5 as they stoned him to death. “And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (Acts 7:59)
My strength fails because of my iniquity (Psalm 31:10)
Sin drains away our strength.
Our strength is invested in covering up our sin, not in ministering to others.
